Q. What’s the power scenario in India, in your view? Has the country been able to bridge the gap between demand and supply?

India’s power industry has a bright future, and the country’s continued economic growth is driving up power demand. India, with an installed power capacity of 408.71 GW as of October 31, 2022, is the third-largest producer and user of electricity globally. According to a projected plan of the Government, India anticipates its annual power demand to increase at an average rate of 7.2% over the five years ending in March 2027, more than double the growth rate of more than 4% seen during the five years before March 2022. According to the plan, India would increase its power generation capacity by 165.3 gigawatts (GW) over five years ending in March 2027, with most of this capacity coming from renewable energy sources. India’s power consumption growth has slowed recently due to an economic slowdown and the implementation of state-wide lockdowns to stop the spread of the coronavirus.

India produces and consumes far fewer greenhouse gases per person than the majority of Western nations, despite being the world’s third-highest producer of greenhouse gases. India and China are responsible for the lion’s share of new renewable energy added globally.

The Government of India’s Ministry of Power says that adopting energy-efficient methods could save about 23% of the energy that is used. This would reduce the demand-supply gap and make the power situation in the country better. But it might take a while because using it requires a lot of investment, awareness, and acceptance. India also buys coal and oil from other places to meet its growing energy needs. Every bit of energy saved or used less helps improve energy security and sustainability. The initiative for Demand Side Management will help conserve resources for the next generation. There is a lot of work to be done in this area, but it is possible for India to save a lot of energy in the near future if the right rules and regulations are in place and people are willing to use energy-saving solutions as a way to build the country.

And I strongly feel this would help close the demand-supply gap to some degree.

Q. Why is there a dire need to conserve energy in the country?

India is the world’s third biggest emitter of greenhouse gases, after China and the US. It releases about 3 gigatonnes (Gt) CO2eq of greenhouse gases each year, which is about 2.5 tonnes per person. This is less than the average for the world, but it still makes up about 7% of the world’s annual emissions, even though it has only 17% of the world’s population. This shows that a large number of people in the country still need access to basic commercial energy. This is a unique problem.

In India, the Energy sector is the most significant source of greenhouse gas emissions, making up 68–70% of annual emissions after this comes agriculture, industrial processes, land use changes, and forestry.

Clean energy sources, like renewables that don’t release greenhouse gases and are also energy efficient are clearly a must. The government wants to make changes to the Energy Conservation Act. These changes will not only make the much-needed improvements to the environment, but they will also set up rules for carbon trading in India, which will encourage more people to use renewable energy.

Q. Power quality is a major issue the industry is facing. What are the ill effects of poor power quality, and how can we address this menace?

In an ideal world, power distribution systems should give their customers a steady flow of clean, sinusoidal voltage at the contracted voltage level (132kV, 66kV, 33kV, 11kV, 415V) and frequency (50Hz in India). In reality, however, power systems face a number of problems that affect the quality of power. These problems can come from generation, transmission, and distribution (T&D) or a customer facility. These power quality problems can make it hard for customer loads to work without interruption. Still, safety problems can shorten the life of the loads and electrical equipment that are connected to them. A customer with a lot of nonlinear loads can also affect the quality of the power supply. The purity of the voltage waveform is lost, which can affect other loads inside or outside the customer’s facility. Power quality (PQ) problems can also be caused by system events that are both normal (like switching a capacitor or starting a motor) and not so typical (like faults).

Power quality KPIs must be tracked and analyzed to make strategic decisions about the best way to fix or lessen possible power quality problems.

Our Power management solutions, Active harmonic filter,Energy storage systems, Static transfer switches, Power conditioning solutions, Power backup solutions, Single Phase input & Single Phase output online double conversion UPS, online double conversion UPS, and Servo Control Voltage Stabilizers are all made to maximize energy efficiency and lead to a responsible and sustainable society.

MRAI’s 9th International Material Recycling Conference is being organised in The Leela Ambience Convention Hotel, Delhi from 5th to 7th May 2022. The Session on the aspects related to Plastic Recycling is scheduled on 5th May 2022 in the second half.

Four major topics related to Plastic Recycling are included in this session for deliberations. They are (1) Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR), (2) Plastic Recycling Cluster Development, (3) Technological developments in plastic recycling, (4) Funding opportunities for plastic recycling projects and (5) BIS standards for Plastic Recycling. These five topics have major role to play in promoting plastic recycling in the country.

EPR is an important lever that provides opportunity for reducing the environmental impact of the plastic packaging after its use is exhausted. It makes the Producers, Importers & Brand owners (PIBOs) of the product responsible for its take-back, recycling and final disposal. EPR has the primary aim to increase the amount and degree of product recovery and hence, EPR drives adoption of sustainable practices and resource efficiency. MoEFCC has recently notified the Plastic Waste Management Rules 2022 in which the EPR obligations of the PIBOs were included and also the mechanism for its implementation has been defined. There is anxiety amongst the stakeholders on how the existing EPR regulation is going to bring all PIBOs – small & big and national & multinational in the ambit of the same. The objective of EPR notification is likely to get fulfilled only when the same is met. The stakeholders are also looking forward to have ease of business while complying to it. The panel discussion on this subject is going to deliberate various opportunities and challenges associated with the EPR implementation and also successfully overcoming them.

There are a large number of plastic recycling industries in informal sector. The recycled plastic granules that they produce are generally of low quality. To product high quality granules, there is need to utilize appropriate advanced recycling technology which is not affordable by them due to their small scale of operation. Also, they lack the desired market reach due to their scale of operation and limited availability of funds, etc. There is need to develop therefore plastic recycling cluster for them where in the processing of the plastic waste can be done with advanced technology on a common scale and then the same is made available to these small industries to produce granules that meet the desired virgin quality standard. This will also provide better market reach to them and hence the price. The panel will discuss these aspects in detail on who to go ahead in implementing these recycling clusters.

In this session, experts are also going deliberate the new & advanced technologies that are in practice now for plastic recycling, the quality standards being drafted by BIS for the recycled plastic granules and the funding opportunity available for the plastic recycling industry from the private funds, etc. This session therefore is going to provide opportunity to the participants to get a good overview of the developments in these matters. Also, this session will be providing opportunity for the participants to interact with the experts & the authorities and get their queries clarified.

Metal & Steel sector is a major user of recycling, bringing colossal savings to the national exchequer. Share your insights and views?

Steel is the most recycled material on the planet. The other highly recycled metals include aluminum, copper, silver, brass, and gold. Government has a vision to develop more steel scrap recycling plants across the country. However, the current steel scrap recycling plants are of the steel giants in the country and they are also based near the steel hubs. If really want to make a difference, such steel scrap recycling plants need to find new manufacturing hubs towards south. The current endeavour by Govt. of India for developing steel cluster such a Purvanchal Region is a laudable initiative, but it already has major steel companies located within the region.

According to the American Geosciences Institute,  the largest energy savings achieved by recycling are generally for metals, which are often easy to recycle and otherwise typically need to be produced by energy-intensive mining and processing of ore. For example, energy savings from beryllium recycling are 80%, lead 75%, iron and steel 72%, and cadmium 50%.

Looking into recycling benefits, when compared with the quantity of energy needed to dump the same products into landfills or waste treatment systems (incinerators) and manufacture new items from scratch, the results of recycling vary dramatically, depending on the item.
Some key differentiators:

  • 20 recycled aluminium cans can be created with the amount of energy it takes to manufacture one new can.
  • Producing plastic items from recycled plastics minimizes energy needs by 66 percent.
  • Around 40 percent of all the trash is paper. Manufacturing recycled paper saves 4,100 kilowatt-hours of energy.

What are the challenges in recycling E-waste?

Product Complexity:

As electronics and electrical are made up of multiple materials, such as glass, various plastics, ferrous & non-ferrous materials, rare-earth elements etc, material separation and sorting of e-waste becomes difficult which is a major challenge faced globally.

Process Efficiency:

Another challenge in E-Waste recycling is the Efficiency. With increased production of consumer electronics, e-waste generation continues to rise. Processing outputs must increase to match demand, and cost-efficient processes must be developed to decrease the cost of sorting e-waste. Sorting and screening solutions must be able to handle large volumes of waste, and do so with minimal downtime.

Lack of capacity utilization and to non- availability of good quality E-Waste:

Setting up of a recycling facility is a capital-intensive process and a recycler invests crores of amount to create an infrastructure but because of non-availability of good quality E-Waste scrap, recyclers are unable to utilize hundred percent of their facility. Thereby, we request the government to provide some financial aid towards the non-utilization of capacity in tonnages and not to reduce the EPR targets.

Lack of Awareness:

Today, there is a huge need of educating people on entire procurement of e-waste. For example: How to handle electronics and how to keep them after their use. People are unaware about maintenance of e-waste and about the delicacy of e-waste. This is one of the biggest reasons why there is non-availability of good quality of e-waste. Informal sector is the biggest procurer of e-waste and due to lack of information and knowledge; they do not dismantle these procured E-waste in a right way, which ultimately hampers the quality of the E-Waste material.

Export agreements:

There are many multi- national companies having their offices situated in India, they are bulk users of electronic items and major generators of e-waste. Many of our members have raised issues of not getting e-waste from them on account of the global agreements they have with recyclers not based in India.

Thereby, we suggest that in order to make good quality e-waste scrap available, export of e-waste generated in India shall be banned, so that the Indian recyclers shall be authorized to process e-waste generated in India.

Non-availability of data on Government Portal:

Presently, there is no system where one can see data on total e-waste generation & EPR capacity each producer has to fulfill on CPCB portal or any other government website portal. Therefore, it is difficult to paint a real picture of total generation or recovery of e-waste and to know if the producers are fulfilling the requirements as per the mandated utilization of their capacity.

We suggest the Government to develop a portal that can help all the stakeholders in the value chain such as rag pickers, segregators, collection yards, distributors and melting recyclers.
