Schmersal India celebrates ten years of manufacturing excellence

Schmersal India celebrates ten years of manufacturing excellence Ranjangaon, July 2023. 1st July 2023 marks a decade of Schmersal India‘s production facility. To commemorate this occasion, Schmersal invited to a jubilee celebration with channel partners, suppliers, customers, and employees, in the factory.

Schmersal India was established in 2007 with just three members. Over the years, due to the growing demand for safety products in India, the Schmersal Group decided to set up the manufacturing facility in 2013 at Ranjangaon MIDC, Pune.

Schmersal is the only Multinational Corporation (MNC) to have a manufacturing facility for safety products in India in line with international safety standards – true to the motto ‘Make in India’. The Schmersal factory at MIDC Ranjangaon, Pune, with almost 4,000 sq m of production and storage space, produces safety systems and solutions for machine safety.

In the last ten years, Schmersal India has written an unprecedented success story: The company has continuously expanded its production and business activities, headed by Sagar Bhosale, Managing Director and founder member. Under his leadership, Schmersal India has experienced exponential double-digit sales growth, not only in products but also in services, which is now an integral part of the business. The workforce has grown from five in the beginning to 143 employees.

In May 2021, Schmersal India celebrated a major milestone by producing 100 thousand safety products in a single month.

A new milestone was reached in December 2022. The company crossed INR 100 million turnover with its Indian operations. Schmersal India also expanded its sales activities in India – both by opening new sales offices and by expanding its network of distribution channels in order to address new markets, increase geographical coverage and improve knowledge and awareness of machine safety in India. Schmersal India also supplies its products and solutions to all SAARC countries.

As part of its global strategy, Schmersal India also established a new competence centre for IT, software and engineering services in India (Schmersal Global Competence Centre) in 2022.

In January 2023, Schmersal announced the inaugural of its expanded office on the 6th floor of Nucleus Mall in Pune. This new location is an important milestone for the company as it signals its continued growth and expansion in the Indian market.

9th Indian Material Recycling Conference (IMRC) of Material Recycling Association of India (MRAI), which is one of the foremost events in the recycling industry, is all set to take place at Leela Ambience Convention Hotel, Shahdara, Delhi between May 5-7, 2022.

The conference is meticulously planned to focus on various topics and sessions such as Circular Economy – the way forward; End-of-Life Vehicles (ELVs) the road ahead; Decoding the Secondary Steel market; A Paradigm Shift of BIS in Non-ferrous; Paper Recycling; EPR on Plastic Recycling; E-Waste – time to synergize; etc.

It will discuss the role of recycling commodities and government policy reforms in the Plenary session on recycling, and decarbonization, among others. It will deliberate on challenges and opportunities in the recycling Industry.

Nitin Gadkari, Union Minister of Road Transport and Highways will grace the occasion as the Chief Guest for the 9th IMRC Plenary Session, Dr. Bhagwat Karad, Minister of State of Finance; Amitabh Kant, CEO, NITI Aayog; Alok Tandon, Secretary, Ministry of Mines and Smt Poonamben Madam, MP, Jamnagar will also address the plenary session on May 7, 2022.

This conference has already received an overwhelming response of 1350 delegates and 45 exhibitors have already confirmed their participation.

MRAI aims to provide a platform where recycling companies/associations can gather to synergize and benefit their trade and industry. 9th IMRC will lead to a fruitful dialogue to help the recycling industry obtain independent Industry status. It will also promote and spread awareness regarding Recycling in India, through networking, and engaging sessions which will provide industry education, updates on research & development, and form industry partnerships.

Apart from these market and research-based discussions, the 9th IMRC will provide a deep insight into current market conditions and register a forecast on how to go ahead.

“Indian government’s policy thrust on the circular economy becomes an important step to acknowledge the power of recycling. With this, we are very confident that ‘Recovery and Reuse of waste will play the key role in India’s growth story at the time when India is moving towards the manufacturing intensive green economy” said Sanjay Mehta, President, MRAI.

In the last 4-5 years, India’s policies have already improved recycling and waste management practices and now the government is in the process of framing up an overarching policy to ensure resource efficiency and a circular economy across all sectors including recycling as well.

India’s Budget for 2022-23 has announced the support for the implementation of action plans in 10 important sectors, including electronic waste and toxic and hazardous industrial waste.

Therefore, we urge the society and manufacturing industry to move away from the ‘take, make dispose of’ mindset to one of improving recycling, promoting reuse, creating a market for recycled materials, and redesigning products with the end of life in mind.

Overall, India needs to enhance the Circular Economy of the recycling sector is an absolute necessity to minimize carbon emissions and negative impact on the environment.

To achieve the Hon’ble PM dream of “Aatmnirbhar Bharat”, sustainable growth is the key. For this India requires a development model where resources are put to maximum utilization. The Government has already notified regulatory norms for some of the sectors like Plastic Waste Management Rules, e-Waste Management Rules, Construction and Demolition Waste Management Rules, Metals Recycling Policy, etc. Besides, EPR provisions have already been put in place for plastics and e-waste.

  • Going forward, stricter regulations and compliance across these sectors along with a few suggestions in the policy framework to be included areas:
  • Government to ensure the criteria for the minimum content of recycled scrap should be a part of the manufacturing process
  • To promote the Circular Economy through recycling, India should allow the import of scrap at zero duty as most countries of the world do.
  • To introduce EPR for Aluminum products as an ideal way to increase the collection of scrap.

Facilitating the formalization of waste and scrap collectors (Kabadiwalas) into a formal sector shall help in improving the tax collection as well as further improving the working conditions in this sector.

Many benefits can be potentially derived by integrating both the formal and informal with both addressing the needs of the value chain simultaneously.

“India’s manufacturing industries work alongside the government to achieve carbon neutrality by 2070. Most companies would be going to the war room and finding ways to immediately, & radically transform themselves – either by replacing their source of energy (if it’s fossil fuel-driven), and or curtailing emissions at every stage of their production processes. In this mission, Recycling industry to be the rock bed of India’s socio-economic & environmental transformation” Dhawal Shah, Sr Vice President, MRAI

Today every government discussion, internal or external – words like sustainability & de-carbonization resonates a lot. So what they call “low carbon” or “green” – we simply call it scrap!! And I say it with even more conviction that our industry is perhaps the biggest and most effective artillery that always has and will continue to help, in combating the perils of global warming.

As being associated with the last 25 years with recycling, I consider this industry to be the rock bed of India’s socio-economic & environmental transformation. The reason I say this is because:

  • 35~40% average contribution to the total output of all non-ferrous metals
  • 25000 small, medium & micro units – over 20 lakh direct/indirect employment
  • It’s a pan-India activity or industry – cutting across every section of society
  • About 30% of the workforce are skilled women, who specialize in scrap metal sorting
  • At a combined average of all non-ferrous metals, we use 1/5~1/8th of energy. There is almost zero waste discharge
  • The carbon footprint is about 5~10%, compared to primary production, through mined resources.

“Future is bright for recyclers as the Recycling industry in India is growing at a CAGR of 8-9 %. The government has worked out a growth plan with the launch of policy reforms such as Vehicle Scrappage Policy, EPR on E-waste, Plastics, Tyres, Batteries, and NITI Aayog has formulated actionable points on Circular Economy. The time is right and fertile to invest in the Indian recycling industry. Those who will miss this occasion will lose their first-mover advantage” Amar Singh, Secretary-General, MRAI

In the next 10 years, MRAI envisions developing its technical wing to share its expertise on the matters of government, policies, representations, and suggestions, all of this while building a verified data pool among others. These developments will be managed and governed by setting up dedicated committees that will work towards achieving the said target. This will help charge MRAI and its members to work for the betterment of the recycling industry more constructively.

Secondary steel manufacturers are playing a vital role in making India Atmanirbhar in the steel sector. The secondary steel industry uses environmentally friendly raw materials such as recycled ferrous scrap and will be a key driver in assisting the Government of India in achieving the objectives and targets set out in the “Vision 2047” document- a blueprint for the next 25 years. Zain Nathani, Director, MRAI

Members of MRAI include recyclers and secondary steel manufacturers and the industry will ensure that the country’s infrastructure demands and steel requirements are catered to from within India itself.

With the guidance and continued support of the Ministry of Steel, the metal recycling and secondary steel sectors will play a vital role in fulfilling the targets of 300 Million MT of steel production by 2030.

Talking about opportunities and challenges in the recycling of EV Batteries in India Mr. ALN Rao, Director, MRAI & CEO of Exigo Recycling Pvt. Ltd. said “The potential for recovering critical metals and minerals like cobalt, lithium, nickel, and manganese from used and discarded Li-ion batteries are going to play a significant role to make India self-sustainable in LIB sector”.

According to Commodore Sujeet Samaddar, NM (Retd), Former Senior Consultant (Industry), NITI Aayog & Advisor, MRAI said, “ELV recycling could generate 9MMT, 2.2 MMT of Ferrous & Aluminium scrap by 2030. It would be an epic disaster if this requirement is met from primary sources.”

Further Mr. Ulhas Parlikar, the Director, quoted “The processing of the plastic waste can be done with the support of advanced technology on a common scale, and then the same is made available to these small industries to produce granules that meet the desired virgin quality standard”.

In the last few years, the emphasis has been to rethink policies in terms of material resource efficiency.

“Circular economy keeps resources such as products, materials, and energy in the economic system for as long as possible and at the highest value possible,” said Prabhjot Sodhi, Director, MRAI.

While highlighting the e-waste industry – time to synergize,

ALN Rao, Director, MRAI said that “Electronic and Electrical waste, collection and management ofwhich remains a key challenge, is one of the rich sources of secondary raw materials and can contribute towards resource security and environmental sustainability for India”

ABB Robotics has signed an agreement to collaborate with California-based Zume, a global provider of innovative, compostable packaging. ABB will supply robotic cells that will enable Zume’s production of sustainable packaging on a global scale, helping to reduce reliance on single-use plastics.

  • Agreement for creation of 100 percent compostable packaging made from plant-based agricultural material
  • ABB robots will automate production, enabling the scale and speed required to make Zume’s packaging a cost-effective alternative to single-use plastics
  • Under 10 percent1 of 380 million tons of plastic produced globally every year is recycled. Plant-based packaging can significantly reduce plastic going to landfill and our oceans

ABB will integrate and install more than 1,000 molded fiber manufacturing cells (MFC) – including up to 2,000 robots at Zume customer’s sites worldwide over the next five years. ABB will leverage its program management capabilities and automation experts in its network of Global Solution Centers to enable the scale, modularity and speed required to launch the solutions, which have the potential to produce millions of pieces of sustainable packaging annually. Financial details were not disclosed.

Manufacturers face increasing pressure from consumers and policymakers to find alternatives to single use plastic packaging. New packaging needs to be sustainable, while being easy to mold and as cost effective as plastic. Zume’s packaging material is made from sustainably harvested plant material left over from agricultural production, including bamboo, wheat and straw. Plant material uses significantly less water and energy and reduces CO₂ emissions when compared to the production and disposal of plastic packaging. Unlike plastic, plant-based material is 100 percent biodegradable and simply breaks down after use.

“Automating production of Zume’s sustainable packaging with ABB robots makes this a viable and economic alternative to single-use plastics. With Zume, we have the potential to remove trillions of pieces of plastic from the global marketplace, preserving scarce resources and supporting a low carbon world,” said Sami Atiya, President of ABB Robotics & Discrete Automation. “Today, robotic automation is expanding possibilities, making the world more sustainable through more efficient production that reduces energy use, emissions and production waste. Our collaboration showcases what is possible when organizations that are committed to pursuing a low-carbon society work together.”

Zume has developed and patented an innovative manufacturing process to make compostable packaging for anything from food and groceries to cosmetics and consumer goods. Containers are molded from the plant material by Zume’s molded fiber cells integrated with two ABB IRB 6700 robots, with each cell processing up to two tons of agriculture material every day, creating 80,000 pieces of sustainable packaging. Working with ABB, Zume expects to equip factories with up to 100 robotic cells each. With the automation, speed and scalability provided by the MFC, each site would have the potential to process 71,000 tons of agriculture material annually, potentially producing up to two billion pieces of packaging each year.

“By 2050, we estimate that the world’s oceans will have more plastic than fish, so it is critical that we move everyone away from single-use plastics,” said Alex Garden, Chairman and CEO of Zume. “Using ABB’s global automation experts to develop and integrate automation solutions for our customers will revolutionize packaging and demonstrate what sustainable manufacturing can look like. The flexibility and scalability of ABB’s robots enables an efficient automated manufacturing process. This means we can offer a viable, cost effective, compostable alternative to plastic, and help manufacturers to become more environmentally-friendly.”

A pilot project has been installed by Zume and ABB at Satia Industries Limited, one of India’s largest wood and agro-based paper manufacturers, creating a facility of 10 manufacturing cells that will process 20 tons of wheat straw daily creating 100 percent compostable packaging for a range of industries.

“Our work with Zume and ABB enables Satia Industries to meet and exceed the expectations of our clients for high-performing, affordable and reliable products that are sustainably manufactured and easily composted,” said Dr. Ajay Satia, CMD Satia Industries. “Besides adding significant value to the company, we are able to support the planet by providing sustainable solutions to help our customers transition to more modern, reliable, and customized products compared to those they use today.”

Other planned pilot installations include Parason Group, a leading global pulp and paper machinery supplier, also based in India and Jefferson Enterprise Energy, the first 100 percent renewable energy powered compostable packaging factory, based in Texas, USA.

Fluke Networks announces FiberLert, the first live fiber detector sized and priced for anyone’s pocket.

Fluke Networks announces the FiberLert™ Live Fiber Detector, a pocket-sized tester that detects invisible near-infrared (850 – 1625 nm) wavelengths used in fiber optic communications.  When placed in front of an active fiber optic port or patch cord, the tester emits a continuous light and optional tone. Unlike more complex testers, the FiberLert requires no setup or interpretation of measurement readings on the part of the user.

“There are a lot of network engineers and technicians who need to test and troubleshoot fiber connections on an occasional basis but lack the tools and expertise to do so,” said Adrian Young, product manager for FiberLert.  “So they are forced to guess as to the cause of a communication issue and replace components such as transceivers and patch cords in the hope of solving the issue.”

FiberLert removes the guesswork by clearly indicating where the signal is present and where it is not.  This allows users to quickly pinpoint and remedy the cause of the problem, such as a failed transceiver or failed patch cord. FiberLert supports single-mode, multimode, UPC/APC patch cords and ports and can test without contacting the port or patch cord, reducing the risk of contamination or damage.

“Where I work, reconfiguring fiber patch panels is a regular chore. Unfortunately, we don’t have dedicated fiber experts,” said Stuart Kendrick, industry blogger and systems engineer at a Seattle biomedical research organization. “The FiberLert accelerates this process by allowing anyone on our busy team to determine if the ticket that says the pathway is no longer in use is correct.  If we remove the patch cord and FiberLert tells us it’s inactive, we will safely repurpose that link.  If FiberLert says it’s active, we quickly plug the cord back in and note that our documentation is incorrect and needs updating.”

FiberLert’s LightBeat™ feature flashes the LED, indicating a powered-on condition and good battery. A timer shuts the tester off after five minutes of inactivity to extend battery life. Rugged design includes a convenient pocket clip and is backed by a two-year warranty.

CADFusion includes a graphical motion trajectory development canvas and also converts DXF/DWG files directly into program files. This lowers implementation risk and delivers dramatic improvements in part quality and throughput.
  • XC6e Pulse-Width Modulation (PWM) Servo Motor Drive – The Automation1 drive for users who need to move heavy payloads at top speeds using high voltage, high currents or both, the XC6e provides up to 100 amps peak output and is available in 240 VAC and 480 VAC voltage options. It controls brushless, brush, voice coil and stepper motors and features include a safe torque off (STO) safety circuit, a drive data array with more than 67 MB of memory, multi-axis Position Synchronized Output (PSO), an I/O expansion board and a 65K encoder multiplier for amplified sine wave encoders of up to 2 MHz input frequency.
  • SI4 Stepper Controller — A two- or four-axis stepper controller that interfaces with any standard stepper drive via clock and direction signals, the SI4 gives users the flexibility to coordinate motion with third-party motors while maintaining all the benefits of using the Automation1 platform. The SI4 includes dedicated axis connectors with encoder feedback (sine +/-, cosine +/- and marker inputs), two end-of-travel (EOT) limit switch inputs, amplifier enables and fault I/O, and optional absolute encoder and multi-axis PSO support.
  • AutoFocus for Drives —AutoFocus is now a standard feature on all Automation1 drives. Designed to simplify sensor integration and increase system performance in surface profiling and scanning applications, AutoFocus is particularly useful in applications where an external analog sensor is used to maintain a constant offset from a workpoint. It is also used in other sensor-based applications, such as force control.
  • Enhanced Throughput Module Support — The Enhanced Throughput Module (ETM), now standard for Automation1, improves the positioning performance of high-dynamic motion systems by directly measuring the unwanted motion of the machine base and communicating it back to the controller. The ETM allows the servo system to do a superior job of executing the desired motion path.
  • XL4s High-Performance Voice-Coil Driver — The XL4s digital drive includes a high-performance linear amplifier designed to drive single-phase motors and eliminate the non-linearities common with PWM amplifiers. Necessary for controlling Aerotech’s AGV3D Three-Axis Laser Scan Head and AGV5D Five-Axis Laser Micromachining Precession Scanner with the Automation1 platform, its 200 kHz update rate makes laser scan heads faster and more accurate.

Aerotech previously introduced several other drives that are compatible with the Automation1 platform, including the:
